My favorite time of the year is here! 🙂  The magical season is making everyone so happy.  Recently, I revisited a lot of moms who just have their second or third child.  It’s always exciting to meet their older child/children again years after meeting them the first time when they were a few days old.  I really want to thank you all for sharing your happiest moments with me years after years.
Besides earning the big trust from my repeating clients, there are two more exciting news of this year I want to share. First, byJanelle photography is being featured on three leading publications in Hong Kong – Time Out Family, Expatliving and Sassymama

Second, I have a new team member Stella who is a certified nanny.  Stella is very experienced with newborns and she has taken care of her grandson since day 1 who is now 6 years old!  As we all know, newborns are very unpredictable and sometimes the newborn session does not always go as smooth as we plan it.  Having Stella on board is a big plus for me and you (parents!).  She’s so excellent at calming a crying baby and she also loves to share her tips on taking care of newborns.  Don’t be shy – you can ask her anything next time when you see her.  Stella also has a photography background. Her father-in-law is a famous photographer in Hong Kong and Stella used to assist him.  Aren’t we lucky? 😛
I feel blessed for being able to work with so many amazing people. Thank you again for your big support.  A friendly reminder – booking for the first half of 2017 are filling up fast. Contact me now to lock in your ideal date for your next photo session.
Follow me on Instagram (@byjanelle_photography) and facebook page (facebook.com/byjanelle.net) for more instant updates.
Wishing you all a wonderful year in 2017!

Over a year ago, I talked about the differences between custom photography and volume photography (click here). In a brief summary, custom photography is catered to YOUR family only. There are no 2 photos alike: they are captured in different time, different light and different subject. Before the session, I often ask my clients to share some photos that they like (either from my portfolio or other sources) so I can prepare and think of the best photography approach for them.

I’m a strong believer in capturing the moments. As a well trained artist / photographer, I try to avoid creating repetitive works. I like the challenges of shooting in a new location every time and I’m often inspired by the new environment or simply the people I work with, YOU 🙂
There are no 2 photos alike. You and your family are the special unique individuals and my job is to capture these beautiful moments of your life for you to treasure for a life time. I’m looking forward to meeting all the little “monkeys” in town this year 🙂 Interested in learning more about a newborn session? contact us today.

Year 2015 went by like a blink of an eye. I didn’t even have time for a wrap up earlier.  So much had happened in 2015 – a lot of traveling, work was unexpectedly busy and I had learned to face a lot of new challeges (I’d like to see it mostly good, haha!). Two highlights I would like to mention. First, THANK YOU! YES! YOU! MY AUDIENCE! I honesty didn’t expect how many of you had actually read my blog before reaching out to me. You always put a smile on my face when I see your emails/texts/calls that how much you like my photos AND my blog. THANK YOU! Every time I see your comments, it motives me and I know the fact that I’m not the only audience to my blog 😀 Second, following your passion and doing what you absolute love every
day is truly amazing. To me, you know what that is. My photography work has inspired a close friend of mine on turning her habit/passion into something bigger! I’m very blessed to have friends who I can share my happiness from photography and through that I inspire others on pursuing their own passions.

Moving forward 2016,  I’ll continue on my mission to meet more newborn babies in town and re-meet all the familiar faces again. It’s always great to re-meet the baby 6  to 9 months after I have taken their newborn photos. They always surprise me how fast they grow but their facial expressions always remain the same!
We are luck that having a pretty warm winter this year. I found the weather is quite perfect for taking some outdoor family photo. Wanna explore some beautiful outdoor places in Hong Kong with me? Contact me to schedule
your next photo session! Looking forward to hearing from you and Happy 2016!

It’s really nice to be back in Hong Kong after some traveling. The last few months have been like a roller coaster ride–a lot has happened between work and life.

I’m asked quite often about how I took the leap of faith to become a full time photographer. Hmmm… there is no short answer for that, but I’d say fulfillment plays a big part. I enjoy every single bit of my work. All of your love stories and life stories are fascinating, and your parenting tips will come in handy to me one day 🙂 ! And the stratification from seeing every one of you having a great time shooting with me and loving the photos is priceless. I do have doubts about myself when work isn’t going the way I want it to. But I always (try to) keep in mind that staying focused and being positive is the way to success!

On a personal note – a lot of new and old faces have walked into / back into my life lately. The last few months haven’t been easy, and I want to say thank you to the ones who have held my hand through this. Some people just completely surprise me, and you all play an important part of my story.  Tyra, your wit and wisdom shocks me! 😉 Janice, you always gets my back! <3

The humid spring of Hong Kong has officially arrived but nothing stops us to go outdoors and have some fun. The backdrop of the old street scene of Hong Kong in Central, the beach and the park are just a few options for your stunning outdoor maternity photography session. Share your amazing ideas with me, and we’ll spend a fun afternoon together!
Weekends in April and May are filling up quickly! Book your session now!

Baby photographs pop up on our Facebook feeds everyday – so often, in fact, that it can feel like every second! The newborn and maternity photography industry is booming like never before, and over the past few years, it has become a sensation in Hong Kong. Welcoming a new family member is absolutely amazing, but it can also be tough, with a million things happening all at once. Choosing a newborn / maternity photographer in hong kong is not an easy task. I’d like to share three important tips to help you make the best choice for your family.

Custom Photography vs. Volume Photography
Custom photography is a luxury service. Every professional photography session is unique and tailored to each family. The photographer works closely with you, taking time to get to know your family stories, exchanging ideas, choosing your wardrobe, providing a final artistic edit, etc. You will not get the same service and outcome from volume style (aka “mall style”) photography services. Volume photographers offer great discounts and focus on getting as many clients as possible to make a profit at such a low cost. As a result, they provide minimal to no creative input for each shoot and reuse poses, tricks, props and styles, with no real personal touch.
You only have a limited time to document this special phase in your life. Consider whether you are looking for just a few cute images, or a custom set of photographs that tells the story of your family and your baby.

You Must Love Their Style
Every photographer has his or her own style. You should never hire a photographer without knowing their style or ask them to “copy” another photographer’s work. Take time to browse through a few portfolios and make a list of your top 5 photographers.
Please see: Newborn Photography – Posed vs. Lifestyle and Maternity Photography – Classic, Outdoor and Family.

Be Sure You Feel a Connection
Newborn and maternity photography is an intimate service; you’re inviting someone into your family to document this special event in your life. How could you possibly share your stories and ides with someone you don’t feel a connection with? Reach out to the top five photographers on your list. They may have all your questions answered on their websites, but you’ll still want to make personal contact with them before making the final call. Having a fun and engaging photo experience is as important as the final outcome.

I am very proud to say that there are so many talented newborn and maternity photographers in our beautiful city of Hong Kong. Just like anything in life, finding the perfect one for you requires some time and effort.
Follow these three simple tips and I am sure you will find the perfect newborn/maternity photographer.

Maternity photography is becoming popular in Hong Kong these days. The best time to take your maternity photos is between 31 and 36 weeks. Your baby bump will have a full, lovely shape and at this stage you will have plenty of energy to move around and enjoy the session.
There are three styles of maternity photography:
Classic – A traditional way to capture your beautiful body at home. Most moms-to-be feel comfortable and relaxed shooting at their own home, and it eliminates the need to travel, especially during the summer! You can choose to pose nude or minimally clothed to show off your full and beautiful belly.
Outdoor – Using a cityscape or nature (such as a park) as a backdrop, I work with the mom-to-be to choose a wardrobe and location that suits their desired mood. Moms-to-be usually wear dresses and let their beautiful belly shine through their clothes.
Family – Sometimes the father-to-be is also eager to get involved, or you have older children that you would like to include. Having your family present will bring a different feel to the photographs, and this can be done at your home or outdoors. It’s completely your choice!
Sometimes it’s possible to combine all three styles into one session. For example, some moms are comfortable showing a little more skin in a quieter park, which is absolutely fine with me. It’s important to let your photographer know what type of images you are looking for before the session.
